Scientific Notation

By reading the title of this post you may be asking "Well why is this post on an algebra blog?" Scientific notation is not only used in science. Scientific notation is used when trying to convert a large decimal such as 0.0000000000000298 (STANDARD FORM) into a smaller number with exponents and coefficients. Watch my video to learn more about the scientific method. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNl3-mJC_wQ&context=C31464d6ADOEgsToPDskI1n6LYRpvzCoV9cJuklRIC
I hope that this video helped you learn about scientific notation.
If you would like some extra practice, here are some problems you can write down and use.

Express in correct scientific notation:
1.  61,500
2.  0.0000568
3.  321
4.  64,960,000
5.  0.07085

Express in standard form:                 Use to check your answer
                                                              after you have solved.
1.  1.09 x 103
2.  4.22715 x 108
3.  3.078 x 10-4
4.  9.004 x 10-2
5.  5.1874 x 102

  1. Thanks Anthony. I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into this post and the video. My biggest critique, though, is that you didn't explain the problem I gave you in the prompt - http://fischalgebra1112.blogspot.com/2012/01/wednesday-january-11-2012.html. You actually ended up doing much more work that I asked you to do, so next time perhaps pay a little closer attention to the question.

    But, again, great effort.
